Why yoga?

Yoga was originally developed as a meditation method in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. It has deep roots! The earliest mention of yoga is in the Vedas, a set of four texts about living a lifestyle of wisdom and worship. Yoga postures were a way to prepare the body for meditation, self-study, and connection with a higher power. Yoga was brought to the West in the early 1900s and it has since grown and spread, as several leaders and gurus developed a following for different types of yoga and philosophies.

People try yoga for different reasons. A consistent practice can help with weight loss, blood pressure regulation, headaches, joint mobility, anger management, stress-related symptoms, and much more. You might also find benefits you don't expect, like a new awareness of your breathing, a really fun, great group of people, or a way to be more present, mindful, or spiritual in the midst of your day-to-day grind.

Where do I start?

If it's your first time, click on the tab MY ACCOUNT and make yourself a profile. Or feel free to call or stop by the studio anytime we're open and we'll help get you all ready to go. Some of our classes regularly fill up so it's important to pre-book your class! When you come in, we'll get you checked in, show you around the place, and then you can get your yoga on! Please note: our classes start right on time and we cannot allow anyone in late out of respect for the teacher and the yogis who have begun their meditation time.

We recommend trying a Gentle, Fundamentals, or Yin Yoga class if it's your first time doing yoga or it's been a while. Gentle and Fundamental classes are great for beginners and will include slow and relaxing, but with a little stretching, movement strengthening, and balancing. You can also try our Yin yoga classes for a focus on deep stretching meditative practice. Vinyasa Classes are going to be more of a workout, with options for advancing postures, and are recommended for those with a little yoga experience, however, our teachers are great at offering modifications and options for all levels.

You can always go to our schedule page and click on the name of the class for more details about what to expect and to learn more about the teacher.

We take off our shoes and socks at the door to leave the floor clean for bare toesies. You're welcome to leave your belongings as well in our lockers by the door. A private key ensures your stuff will be secure during class. Bring a mat if you have one, or borrow one of ours. Try wearing comfortable clothing so you can move and breathe easily. Water might be nice to have as well.

What do I expect?

Come in at least 15 minutes before your first class to sign in, drop your shoes and belongings at the door, get a tour, and get the best pick on where you want to put your mat down. Don't have a mat? No problem- borrow one for free. Grab a block or two, or maybe a blanket for your Savasana (resting pose) at the end. Sometimes the teacher will have specific props they'll want you to have to be used in class, especially in Yin.

Important memo: CLASS STARTS RIGHT ON TIME AND WE CANNOT ALLOW LATE-COMERS INTO CLASS. It's just not fair to those who have already started their practice or to the teacher who has already started class. Thanks for understanding!

Every teacher will start class with an introduction and some calm centering and breathing. Then, depending on the type of class, they'll expertly lead the class through a series of movements/poses to gently and safely warm the body. The middle will usually be a little more challenging or focused. Finally, the end will have you slowing down and cooling down. Then we finish every class with a lovely Savasana (or Corpse Pose- our favorite part!), where you lay and rest, release, and relax.

A consistent practice of at least twice a week will help you see (and feel!) a difference in your body, mind, and spirit. We like to encourage a balance of slow, meditative classes (like Yin, Restorative, and Nidra) with more active classes to get your muscles warm and heart pumping (like Vinyasa classes)
